About This Book

Black Beauty recalls his story from the time when he was a colt, through the various experiences of his life with various owners. Experiences both good and bad, as Black Beauty learns about life and hardships. Black Beauty’s first memories are of a lovely meadow, and spending time with his mother Duchess. She gives him a lot of advice on how to behave when he goes to a new owner. Black Beauty has a good life there. Soon, though, Black Beauty is old enough to be sold, and so begins his life. He is sold to Squire Gordon, a man who knows how to look after horses. He is named Black Beauty and he makes friends with other horses at the stable, Ginger and Merrylegs. The good life of the horses at the Gordon stables changes, because the Gordons are compelled to move to a warmer place for Mrs. Gordon’s health. Ginger and Black Beauty are sold to a new stable where the people do not know and do not care much about horses. Black Beauty keeps changing hands from one owner to another. He then becomes a carriage horse, but the cab driver, Jerry Barker, is a kind man who is kind to his horse. He does not overwork or ill-treat Black Beauty. Not all the cab drivers are like Jerry, and one day, Black Beauty meets his friend Ginger. The beautiful mare looks ill and her high spirits are broken. A few days later, Black Beauty sees a cart pulling away with the corpse of Ginger in it, and he feels that it is a relief for his friend. One day, Jerry Barker is made to wait in the cold by a fare, and he becomes ill. Black Beauty has to be sold because Jerry can no longer drive a cab. He keeps changing hands and he experiences too many hardships and collapses. Luckily for him, he is bought by Farmer Thoroughgood, who takes care of him and helps him recover completely. He is then sold to the Blomefields. There, Black Beauty meets an old friend, Joe Greene, a stable hand he knew at the Gordon’s place. Black Beauty is at last assured of a final home where he can spend the rest of his life in peace. He is treated well, used wisely, and this is the place where the reader first met Black Beauty as he began recalling his life up to that point. About Anna Sewell Anna Sewell was an English author. Black Beauty is her only published work. Anna Sewell was born in Norfolk, England in 1820. When she was a young girl, she slipped and broke both her ankles. They never healed properly, and she had to walk with a crutch for the rest of her life. She used horse drawn carriages frequently, and this induced in her a love for horses and all animals. It made her want to do something to promote more humane treatment of animals. It was with this aim that she wrote Black Beauty. The book is now considered a children’s classic. She died at the age of 58 due to hepatitis.
